Small But Mighty

Foreword

Children and youth around Australia are participating in amazing challenges and creating positive change every day through innovation, determination and youthful hope.

This book aims to highlight these achievements to other young people and inspire them to achieve.

This collection of stories shines a spotlight on our amazing young people and celebrates their achievements; big and small, city and rural, athlete and para-athlete, new Australians, adventure and arts, caring and solo, indigenous and non-indigenous, LGBTQI, female, male or non-binary.

Education in Australia focuses heavily on preparing our young people to emerge as successful adults. This book recognises that we also need to celebrate the phenomenal and insightful achievements of young people as young people.

Let’s celebrate our young people for the achievements they are making happen right now. You don’t have to wait to be an adult to be mighty, you can be Small But Mighty too.

Small But Mighty” is a phrase that comes from a mother of 3 young children. In a chance encounter with the author on top of a water slide, she remarked as she had one of each of her three kids going down the slide that “it’ll be okay, they’re small but mighty”.

The phrase stuck with the author as he watched his young children aged 6 and 8 face small but mighty challenges, culminating in one of the stories you’ll read in this collection of tales, “Angel’s Landing”.

The phrase empowers young people to achieve. It emboldens them to tackle challenges that seem too big and it brings fantastic confidence and self growth. Adults need to empower children and let them hear this message.

Read this book with your Small But Mighty young people and go on an inspiring journey of empowerment and motivation from other young people across Australia.
